LISTEN: Max Bruch Rumanian Melody from Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano
Daniel Silver, Clarinet; Barbara Hamilton, Viola; Andrew Cooperstock, Piano

The CCP trio performs Bruch, Mozart and Clarke at Curious Theatre's "Mamie's", interpersed with comedic literature of love read by Curious Theatre actors Laurence Curry and Amie MacKenzie, as part of a year-long collaboration.

Max Bruch was one of those composers that refused to enter willingly into the 20th century.  The Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola & Piano, were written for his son, a professional clarinetist.   Although Bruch's Eight Pieces were composed in 1910, they seem to have nothing in common with the experimentation swirling around Europe at the time. Stravinsky's Rite of Spring caused riots three years later in Paris; Schoenberg was already pushing the envelope with chromaticism and atonality in 1910.  The Eight Pieces were composed more in the style of Brahms and the great romantics,  with great lyricism and expression.

Rebecca Clarke's joyous Prelude, Allegro and Pastorale for Clarinet and Viola, was dedicated to her brother and sister-in-law as an homage to love.  Clarke was one of the first successful women composers in the 20th century, and had to fight her family's wishes to become a performer and composer.  She was born in England, but emigrated to the USA during WWII.

Mozart's delightful Kegelstatt Trio will start the program, with the wonderful third movement variations.

Join the distinguished classical chamber music trio of clarinet, viola and piano trio in celebrating the wonderful romantic music by Bruch and Clarke, and comedic love poetry. The CCP presents the best in classical chamber music in Denver, with live classical chamber music concerts.
