Matthew Dane

Guest Artist, Violist

Violist Matthew Dane, enjoys a career of both teaching and playing. He relocated to Boulder in 2007, and previously served as Assistant Professor of Viola at the University of Oklahoma, Principal Violist of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, and a member of both Quartet Oklahoma and the Brightmusic Ensemble. He served on the faculty of the Metropolitan State College and CU/Boulder, and plays Assistant Principal Viola in the Colorado Music Festival.

As a chamber collaborator, Dane has performed with the Colorado Quartet, the Dorian Wind Quintet, Houston-based CONTEXT, Athelas Ensemble (Denmark), the Fischer Duo, and members of the Brentano Quartet, among others. Chamber music festival appearances include OK Mozart, Portland (Maine), Chamber Music Quad Cities (Iowa), and Tanglewood. He and his wife Christina Jennings founded Brightmusic, a chamber music series in Oklahoma City. Before moving to Oklahoma, Dane held orchestral positions with the Houston Ballet Orchestra, Hannover State Opera (Germany), and Springfield Symphony (Massachusetts). As a soloist his first CD, The Viola Works of Gordon Jacob, will be released by Albany Records. Teaching has long been a passion. Dane was a teaching assistant at both Rice University's Shepherd School and Amherst College. He has also coached chamber music and individual teaching at several summer festivals, including Greenwood Music Camp and Musicorda. Dane was invited to teach at the 2005 International Viola Congress in Reykjavik, Iceland, and also adjudicated the 2005 Primrose Memorial Competition. In the summers, he has taught at the Heifetz Institute (Wolfeboro, NH), Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival (Burlington, VT), and Texas Music Festival (Houston, TX).

Principal teachers were Philipp Naegele, Hatto Beyerle, Wayne Brooks, Karen Ritscher, and Martha Katz. His Doctoral Document, which examines the teaching influence of Karen Tuttle, enjoys wide circulation amongst amateur and professional violists nationwide. Dane serves the viola community as Editor of the Journal of the American Viola Society.

Dane performed with the CCP in February 2008 at Colorado College, in Mozart's C major viola quintet, K. 515, and will join the ensemble on October 9, 10 and 14 performing on the "Dvorak in Love" program.
