Storytelling: Little Red Riding Hood and Red Dogs and Pink Skies: A Musical Celebration of Gauguin
Sunday, February 9, 2003 - Shwayder Theatre/Mizel Center for Arts and Culture at the JCC 4pm
Bruce Adolphe, composer/narrator
Red Dogs and Pink Skies: A Musical Celebration of Paul Gauguin, was inspired by Gauguin's paintings and his Tahitian journal Noa Noa. Bruce Adolphe's musical homage colorfully evokes the painter's world. The piece tells the story of Gauguin's artistic journey in music, and will be narrated by Adolphe himself. Red Dogs was commissioned in conjunction with the Gauguin exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and was premiered in the spring of 2002.
Little Red Riding Hood is a favorite tale around the world. Adolphes version is humorously set to music, and each character has a catchy, identifiable tune. A new ending involving the Heimlich maneuver will amuse audiences, especially wolf fans.

Vignettes: New York Scenes
Sunday, March 30, 2003 - Shwayder Theatre/Mizel Center for Arts and Culture at the JCC 7pm
Music of Kernis, Schoenfield, Druckman and others
New York has produced and influenced numerous composers in the 20th century. Six composers who lived and worked in New York are represented on this program. Blochs haunting Suite Modale and Bernsteins Dream With Me hearken back to the middle of the century. Jacob Druckmans jagged Dark Wind was one of his last works. Sheila Silvers lyrical Six Préludes for solo piano bring the New Yorker to Paris. Paul Schoenfields Slovakian Childrens Songs explore the crossover style. Aaron Jay Kernis, a Pulitzer prize winner, creates Italian drama in the narratated work The Four Seasons of Futuristic Cuisine. A memorable menu of New York vignettes!
