Thursday February 17, 2005, Brundibar Youth Performances, Gates Theater, Newman Center, University of Denver Saturday February 19, 2005, Brundibar with Central City Opera, 7:30 p.m.,Gates Theater, Newman Center, University of Denver Sunday February 20, 2005, Brundibar with Central City Opera, 2:00 p.m., Gates Theater, Newman Center, University of Denver Cental City Opera, with the Colorado Children's Chorale and the Colorado Chamber Players present the children's opera Brundibar. This opera, about the power of friendship and cooperation, was composed by Czech coposer Hans Krasa prior to his imprisonment in the concentration camp Terezin, with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister. The opera tells the story of a brother and sister who, with the help of friends and forest animals, take on and defeat the bullying, villainous street musician, Brundibar. The opera was performed over 50 times by children imprisoned in Terezin in 1943 and 1944. Terezin survivor Ela Stein Weissberger, an original cast member of the concentration camp performance, will appear at each performance. The Colorado Children's Chorale, conducted by Debbie DeSantis, will also perform songs inspired by children's poetry written during the Holocaust. Tickets may be purchased at the Newman Center Box Office at Iliff & University between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, or online at the Newman Center.
