The glittering world of the Hungarian and Austrian musical capitals is recreated in this program of luscious turn-of-century European music. Colorado Symphony Principal Horn Michael Thornton is featured guest artist in the majestic Brahms horn trio (for horn, violin and piano) and in the energetic Doynanyi Piano Sextet for clarinet, horn, violin, viola, cello and piano. Erich Wolfgang Korngolds Suite for Violin and Piano is extracted by the composer from his film score to Much Ado About Nothing. Korngold, a child prodigy, was one of Viennas wunderkinds when World War II broke out. He emigrated to Hollywood in 1936, where he wrote lavish film scores (including Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn), never to return to Austria.
Program
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Four Pieces for Violin and Piano from Much Ado About Nothing, op.11
Johannes Brahms: Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano, op.40
Ernst von Dohnanyi: Sextet for Piano, Winds and Strings, op.37
