Claude Debussy was one of Frances most important composer in the early 1900s, and invented a new chamber music form near the end of his life: flute, viola and harp trio. The impressionistic trio matches up three disparate instruments, with a sumptuous effect. Debussys groundbreaking work in harmony, color, form and new instrumental combinations influenced countless 20th century composers. This program explores Debussys influence on British composers Rebecca Clarke, Richard Rodney Bennett and Arnold Bax
Program:
Arnold Bax: Elegiac Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp (1916)
Rebecca Clarke: Morpheus, arr. for Viola and Harp (1918)
Rebecca Clarke: Prelude, Allegro and Pastorale, for Viola & Clarinet (1941)
Claude Debussy: Syrinx for Solo Flute (1913)
Richard Rodney Bennett: Sonata After Syrinx for Flute, Viola and Harp (1986)
