Julie Duncan Thornton, Flute
Julie Duncan Thornton joined the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in 1997. In 2004, she joined the faculty of Colorado State University as Lecturer in Flute. She has also performed, recorded and toured as both flutist and piccolo with the New York Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Houston Symphony. Each summer, she performs chamber music as Principal Flute of the Washington Island Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin.
A native of Mercer Island, Washington, Ms. Thornton holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University. In addition, she has completed her coursework towards a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Rice University. She has also performed with the Grand Tetons Festival Orchestra, Strings in the Mountains, the Aspen Music Festival, the Solti Orchestral Project at Carnegie Hall, the National Repertory Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute, the Houston Grand Opera and the Music Academy of the West. A winner and finalist of several competitions, she has studied with Walfrid Kujala, Bonita Boyd, Leone Buyse, Carol Wincenc and Anne Diener-Giles. Julie is married to Michael Thornton, Principal Horn of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. They enjoy playing chamber music together.
